In the next in our infographic series on the news from renewables of 2018, we look at Q2 of this year.

As we saw in Q1 2018, the focus on renewables has grown over the year as has the growth in its share of generation. As a result of the increased capacity of renewable energy, as reported in smarterbusiness, earlier in the year the country managed to spend more than two days without using any coal-fired power for the first time in more than a century!

In Q2 2018, despite lower generation than the previous quarter, renewables beat their own record by providing 31.7% of electricity generation. This was due to increased capacity totalling 42.2 GW though there was lower overall electricity generation.

The largest increase among other technologies was for plant biomass which increased by 12%, this correlates with the trend reported by Power Engineering that biomass power generation ‘has increased steadily by upgrading older coal plants to biomass plants.’

Liquid biofuels represented 3.8% of petrol and diesel consumed in road transport, totalling 460 million litres. This was an increase of 14% on the same quarter in 2017.

All of these positive figures show that renewables are moving in the right direction towards a more sustainable country, and Clear Business is proud to play a part in this with our green electricity for businesses.
