From RTS to Smart: It's time to upgrade to smart meters

Ever heard of RTS meters? Well, they're getting a major upgrade soon. On March 31st, 2025, the radio signal that powers these old-school meters is shutting down. What does this mean for you? Read our blog post to find out.

You might have heard about a big change happening with your energy meter. On 31st March 2025, the radio signal that controls your Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) energy meter is getting switched off. What does that mean exactly? Well, let’s break it down for you.

First off, what's an RTS meter?

It's an old-school type of meter that relies on outdated technology. These meters use a radio signal to do their thing, like switching between peak and off-peak times. But with the signal being retired, there could be some impact on your energy service.

This will happen to everyone with an RTS meter, regardless of their provider. How much functionality is lost will depend on your meter. Some may stop recording off-peak/peak tariffs properly and some may lose the ability to turn on electrical heating systems completely, leaving you without heating and hot water.

But don't worry! We're here to help you out. We don’t want you left in the cold (literally!). That's why we're talking about upgrading to a smart meter.

What's a smart meter?

What's a smart meter, you ask? It's like the iPhone to your old Nokia.  Smart meters don't need a radio signal to work their magic. Plus, they help monitor your energy usage and help you save money. Win-win!
